Alice Sobrino

September 22, 1921 — December 26, 2015

Alice Ruth Sobrino passed away peacefully in the early morning of December 26, 2015. She was born on September 22, 1921 in Wichita Falls, Texas to Karl August Wolf and Bertha A. Lange Wolf. Her brother was James Raymond. She moved from her birthplace to Llano Texas where she lived downtown on the river. She spent many of her summers visiting her Aunt Lily in her mom's old family homestead. Her family moved to San Antonio where she lived in the King William District. She graduated from Brackenridge High School and went to work for Kress downtown. There she met Rosie Sobrino who introduced her to St. Mary's Catholic Church's noon Mass and to her handsome brothers.
Fausto fell in love with Alice and she with him and the rest was history. They soon married at St. Anne's Catholic Church. The two of them set out on an adventure by following a job to Sabinas, Mexico. Alice loved the desert and mountainous terrain and she learned Spanish by listening to novelas on the radio. After 5 years they left Mexico and moved to Brownsville, Texas to raise a family. Linda came first and trained her parents so there was smooth sailing for Janie. Alice spent time caring for her husband's aging parents and making a home. She was active in the community, church and the girls' Catholic schools. They moved back to San Antonio when Alice went to work for Naomi's Gift Shop, a store owned by her family, Lanier and Rosie Sobrino Harris. They were co-workers first, best friends and family later.
When Alice retired, they moved again to Pearsall, Tx. She loved the small town and the convenience of everything nearby, including her grandchildren. She and Fausto cared for her mother, played with grandkids and continued travelling, one of her favorite pastimes. Fausto passed away followed by her mother and Alice found two new travelling partners, her brother James and his wife Pauline. They often went West where they loved the history and the same desert and mountainous terrain that Alice loved and missed. She spent her last years in her home in Pearsall proud of her independence but thankful for the care and love from Esperanza Cuevas, her caregiver. She visited with her grandkids and played cards with them. She taught them to love books, art, beauty in nature, to crochet, tat and knit. She wrote weekly to her granddaughter Rachel who lived in New York. She had a regular Tuesday lunch date with her granddaughter Rebekah and great grandkids Josephine and Otto. She shared Thanksgiving at her granddaughter Brooke's home with grandkids and great grandkids.
Alice was a teacher by nature and she taught by example. She loved books, we saw her read, so we all became readers too. She kept a binder of her favorite poems and so we loved poetry. She loved to travel where new places were moments to learn history, language and culture. She was creative making beautiful things with her hands which she shared with everyone. She taught us how to both live and die with dignity and grace, keeping a sense of humor and always being kind. Father Valentine anointed her and we thought she did not even know it happened but later she asked Linda if she was now holy enough for God her father, after being blessed with oil. She died holding on to her blessed medal of St. Ann, Mary's mother. She prayed hard and loved deeply and so she taught us to know that there is a far better place we go to and she will be there waiting to welcome us.
She is survived by her daughters: Linda and her husband John Milam of Uvalde, Janie and her husband James Mann of Big Foot. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren: Janine and her husband Derek Bryant of San Antonio and children Alexandra and Michael Fawzi; Deadra and her husband Valen Dews of Bandera and children Madelynn, Landry, and Kristynn Kinsel, Ashley Gilbert, Devin and Dani Dews; Brooke and her husband J Allen Carnes of Uvalde and children Abigayle, Peyton, and Brodie Carnes; Rachel and her husband Jason Mitchell of Albany, New York; Zachary Mann and his wife Rebekah of Big Foot and children Josephine and Otto.
