Lon Rushing Jr. 90, of Sabinal, Texas passed away on September 20, 2011 in Uvalde, Texas. Funeral services will be held on Friday September 23, 2011 at 1:30 at the First Baptist Church in Sabinal. The family will greet friends on Thursday September 22, 2011 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the RushingEstesKnowles Chapel in Sabinal.
Lon Jr. was born October 16, 1920 in Agua Dulce, Texas to Lon and Beulah Goforth Rushing. Before he retired he was the majority owner and director of the RushingEstesKnowles Funeral Homes in Sabinal and Uvalde where he guided countless families through the loss of their loved ones with his trademark compassion. He also owned Rushing Grocery in Sabinal and worked there for many years.
Lon served as a medic with the 58th Evacuation Hospital during WWII. Never one to boast, it was only when questioned by his adult grandchildren that he acknowledged receiving a citation for meritorious achievements and a Bronze Star for his contributions during the invasion of Cebu Island.
He was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church of Sabinal where he served as a deacon, secretary of the Sunday school, and treasurer. He was especially pleased to have played a role in establishing the Concan Baptist Church.
Lon was a devoted husband, companion, and caregiver to his wife of 56 years, Zrayda Hobbs Rushing. He once remarked that his favorite pastime was taking care of Nan. Most importantly to his family, PaPa was a loving father, grandfather, greatgrandfather and friend to many.
He enjoyed playing pitch, attending Supper Club, searching for the perfect sheet cake recipe, making peanut brittle, driving to Uvalde for a Frosty and counting the goats and sheep with his greatgrandchildren on his beloved family farm.
Lon is predeceased by his wife Zrayda his parents Lon Sr. and Beulah Rushing his brother and sisterinlaw, Delwin and Beatrice Rushing and his soninlaw Philip Ljungdahl.
PaPa is survived by his daughter Patti Ljungdahl of College Station, son, Ron Rushing and wife Marla of San Antonio grandchildren, Stacy Ljundgahl Croft of Lousiville, KY and Reagan Ljungdahl of The Woodlands, TX and five great grandchildren.
The family would like to thank dear neighbors Joe and Billie Boyd for their friendship and daily care during these last years, Eck and Modene Horton and Paul Sr. and Roberta Gass for their loving companionship and help, and many others who knew and loved Lon.
