Joe was a quiet man, most never knew what a horseman he was. Through the Appaloosa Horse Club he won 3 World Championships 1965, 1967, 1968, and through the Texas Goat Roping Association he won belt buckles for all the kids, grandkids and greatgrand kids and some other special kids as well as the Sr. World Champion Goat Roper in 1993. He taught his kids and grandkids to ride, as well as training the horses they rode, while never missing a Horse Club event to coach and see those grandkids ride. He ranched this Canyon his whole life from starting with helping his dad growing up who sheared goats for five cents a head to his shearing in 1956 for twenty cents a head to raising many 4H Champion Goats. Later in life he went to building custom made stirrups Texas Classic Stirrups, with his daughter and her husband in Barksdale. He built stirrups for such people as PRCA World Champion Steer Roper, Scott Snedecor and even past United States President, George W. Bush. But he enjoyed most building the stirrups for friends. Joe helped the community throughout the years: he helped build the arena at Barksdale and then the Show Barn and Arena in Camp Wood. He helped or was a member of most organizations in the canyon: the Fire Department, N.C. Roping Club, N.C. Jr. Horse Club, N.C. Jr. Livestock Association, FFA, 4H, AMAHTA, and N.C. Chamber of Commerce in so many, many ways.
Joe was a rancher, horseman, roper, craftsman, devoted husband, Dad, PawPaw, a good neighbor and true friend. He was dearly loved and will be sorely missed while he is riding that favorite spotted pony in the green meadows of heaven. Joe will be remembered for being a Champion in and out of the arena.
