B. Burhl McClung was born on October 12, 1924 in Las Cruces, NM to Lee and Virginia McClung. He grew up and attended school in Hillsboro, TX, where he met Jimmi Browning. They were married on October 21, 1950 in Hillsboro.
Burhl served as a Pharmacist 2nd Class on the Navy destroyer USS Bennett during World War II. The ship was involved in numerous major battles in the Pacific Theater, including those at Iwo Jima, Okinawa, Guam, and Leyte Gulf in the Philippines.
After his military service ended, he attended Texas AM where he graduated in 1950 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Agricultural Economics. Burhl went to work for the USDA in the plant protection and quarantine division, and his career required the family to move to different parts of the US. They were finally relocated to Uvalde in 1976, where he eventually retired after 35 years.
After his retirement, Burhl enjoyed golfing, camping and fishing. He and Jimmi joined the Honey Bees Square Dancers, and enjoyed their numerous RV trips with the Camping Squares. He also relished his time as a volunteer driver transporting cancer patients to San Antonio for their treatments, and was a member of the First Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Raymond McClung and Harold McClung, and one sister, Frances Harvey.
Burhl is survived by his wife of over 63 years two daughters, Pamela DUrso and husband, Steve of Mahomet, IL, and Penny Thomas and husband, Randy of Katy, TX two sons, Scott McClung and wife, Janece of Uvalde, and Kelly McClung and wife, Cassie of San Antonio five granddaughters, Megan Steinlage of St. Louis, MO, Kim DUrso of Katy, TX, Taylor Morton of The Woodlands, TX, Haley Thomas of Katy, and Kayla McClung of San Antonio two stepgranddaughters, Jeanneh Allen and Sunni Merritt of San Antonio two grandsons, Hunter Thomas of Katy, and Joshua McClung of San Antonio and one great granddaughter, Emma Morton of The Woodlands. Burhl is also survived by his two sisters, Edith Wiley of New Braunfels, TX and Jeanelle Barrow of Eastland, TX, numerous nieces and nephews, and his beloved little dog, Heidi.
The family will greet visitors at RushingEstesKnowles Mortuary on Wednesday, April 30, 2014 from 5:007:00 PM. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, May 1, 2014 at 2:00 PM at RushingEstesKnowles Mortuary. Burial will be held on Friday, May 2, 2014 at 10:45 AM at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, TX.
