Bertha Lerma Bernal, age 93 of Boerne, Texas passed away quietly and peacefully on February 27, 2012 surrounded by her loving family and friends.
She was the daughter of the late Pablo Castellanos Lerma and Elodia Yglecias Lerma, born May 15, 1919, in Muzquiz, Coahuila, Mxico. As a young girl, Bertha immigrated to this country at the age of 13 as the eldest of six children, she worked hard to help her parents raise her younger siblings while the family sought the American dream. Bertha married Eugenio Rios Bernal, II in 1939 at the age of 20, and together, they had two children, Minerva and Gene Eugenio, III. Eugenio lost his life in an automobile accident in 1954.
Bertha worked very hard for many years and raised her two young children with a lot of love and support from her loving parents, and siblings in Uvalde, TX. In 1974, with her children grown and married, Bertha retired and moved Douglas, AZ to live out the rest of her life with her daughter, Minerva, soninlaw, Ben and their daughters Yvonne, Dina, Marisa. In her golden years, Bertha followed Minerva and Ben to Camargo, Chih. MX, where they lived for 22 years, and then moved with them when they retired to live out her final years back home in Boerne, TX.
She enjoyed cooking, gardening, crocheting and spending time with her family and friends. She will be remembered for her gentle nature, and special ability to make friends wherever she went. Bertha had a strong work ethic that she passed on to her children and grandchildren.
Bertha is survived by one sister, Mara del Refugio Cuca Yglecias Lerma Negrete, of Uvalde, TX, and two children, Minerva Bernal Prez Ben P. Prez of Boerne, TX and Gene Lerma Bernal Dora Arredondo Bernal of Winters, TX. She is also survived by seven grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.

Luna of Boerne, TX Elma Jean Bernal of Winters, TX Albert Arredondo Bernal Christina Bernal of Shallowater, TX Eugenio Bernal, IV, Orlando, FL Erik Jonathan Bernal Heidi Bernal of San Antonio, TX.
And, her great grandchildren include: Riley Daniel Ripley, Jimmy John Ripley Hunter Nicole Bernal, Albert Nathaniel Bernal, Noah Gene Bernal Kire Katrina Bernal Victoria E. Bernal, Mercedes E. Bernal Devin Elise Graham, Chaney Reese Graham.
Bertha is predeceased by her beloved parents, Pablo and Elodia Lerma her sisters, Socorro Lerma Maldonado and Consuelo Yglecias Lerma and her brothers, Ral Yglecias Lerma and Pablo Yglecias Lerma and her granddaughter, Debbie Arredondo Bernal.
Visitation and Rosary will be held on Friday, March 2, 2012 at 7:00 p.m. at Rushing Estes Knowles Funeral REK Home. A viewing will also be held at REK on Saturday morning prior to the funeral Mass at 9:00 a.m. A Mass will follow the viewing at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 3, 2012 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Uvalde, TX. And, internment will follow the Mass at Catholic Cemetery, Uvalde, TX.
Pallbearers will be Gene Bernal IV, Albert A. Bernal, Erik J. Bernal, Riley Daniel Ripley, Jimmy John Ripley and Albert Nathaniel Bernal. Honorary pallbearers will be Elma J. Bernal, Noah gene Bernal, Devin Elise Graham, Chaney Reese Graham and Alyssa Nicole Chapoy.
