Bettie Jewel Butler Gilbert, 94, passed away on September 2, 2024, at Amistad Nursing Home in Uvalde.
She was born on February 7, 1930, to Mildred Butler in Clarksville, Texas.
She was converted at age 13 years of age, and joined the St. James Baptist Church in Clarksville, Texas, and was baptized the same year. She graduated in 1948 from Cheatham High School in Clarksville, Texas.
On May 23, 1964, she met and married Edward Gilbert and moved to Uvalde, Texas. She joined the New Light Baptist, and served as church secretary for 37 years, was a Sunday school teacher for 30 years, was president of the Missionary Society, and President of the church choir. She was a member of the Lodge Heroine of Jericho from 1966 to 2001, where she served as Matron for a number a years.
Bettie was a good neighbor, loving mother, a devoted wife and above all she was a true Christian. She worked hard and long. Her life was full and running over with good spirits. She was a happy person, seemed to enjoy every minute of her spirit filled life and was never happier than when serving her Lord in her church and Sunday school. She believed that one who was willing to work for the Lord would have everlasting bliss, and we know that her faith and her works are laid up as a memorial for her before God.
She leaves behind two children, Kelley E. Oliver and wife, Cynthia of Crowely, Texas and Valerie J. Gaither of Uvalde, Texas; grandson, Kelshan E. Oliver, great grandchild, Kylie Eden Oliver and numerous, sisters, friends and family.
She is preceded in death by her mother; husband, Edward Gilbert; daughter, Claudine Oliver; and grandson, Brian Keith Chapman.
Interment was held at Hillcrest Cemetery.
