Bettie Hale

Bettie Berniece Hale of Uvalde passed away on November 26, 2016 in Uvalde Memorial Hospital at the age of 91. She was born on September 19, 1925 in San Antonio to Lawrence Romney Riddle and Edna Van Pelt Riddle. She was raised in California and graduated from King City High School in King City, CA in 1943. She traveled back and forth between California and Texas to visit relatives in the Concan area. On one of these visits, she met Manza Lewis Hale. They fell in love and were married on January 1, 1949. They resided in Kingsville, then Austin until 1954 when her husband graduated from the University of Texas with a degree in pharmacy. She worked at the Lower Colorado River Authority and the University of Texas (The Tower) administrative office to help support his education. They moved to Uvalde where her husband began his pharmaceutical career at Palace Drug Store, which they later purchased. They built Park Manor Nursing home located on Park Street in 1965 and she served as the Administrator until it was sold in 1980, as well as several other businesses during their life together. Bettie is survived by two sons, Manza Hale, Jr. and wife Paula, and Jamie Hale, all of Uvalde; sister, Alice Ann Harrison; nephew, Rodney Harrison and wife, Danielle; and two great-nephews, Draven and Zane Harrison, all of Uvalde; five grandchildren, Heather Kerby, Tristan Hale, Manza Hale III, Caleb Hale, and Kenneth Hale; and four great-grandchildren, Brinnley and Bellamy Miller, Caden Hale, and Alex Hernandez. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brother-in-law, Herbie Harrison; and nephew, Clay Harrison. A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, November 29, 2016 at 10:00 AM in Uvalde Cemetery. Rev. Mike Marsh will officiate. Pallbearers will be Tristan Hale, Manza Hale III, Caleb Hale, Kenneth Hale, and Rodney Harrison.
