Braxton Newell Cotton Smallwood of La Pryor passed away on July 18, 2008, at his residence at the age of 85. He was born on April 10, 1923 in Bandera County to Jasper Braxton and Lillie Mae Chaney Smallwood. He graduated from Utopia High School in 1940. Most of his working years were spent as a contractorcabinet builder. After retiring, he helped many elderly by doing repair jobs for them. He was a member of the Baptist Church and was an active deacon for many years. He was a Gideon for several years. He married Kay Lewis Allen on May 27, 1971 in Clovis, NM. He is survived by his wife of 37 years; son, J.W. Smallwood wife, Maria of Waller, TX; stepson, David Allen and wife, Yvonne of Uvalde; son-in-law, Junior Brietzke of Austin; two brothers, Ray Smallwood wife, Nell Rose of Brackettville and Doug Smallwood and wife, Pat of Houston; sister, Rhoda Ware of Kerrville; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Ella Faye Loman and Dorothy Mae Barker; brothers, James W. Smallwood and Gerald Smallwood; daughter, Shirley Ann Brietzke; and nephew, Perry Smallwood. Funeral services will be held on Monday, July 21, 2008 at 11:00 AM at the Rushing-Estes-Knowles Chapel in Uvalde with burial to follow in Waresville Cemetery, Utopia, TX. Rev. Dan Bliss will officiate. Pallbearers will be James Edward Smallwood, Evan Brietzke, John Comstock, Josh Baron, John Anthony Allen, Jimmy Lee Allen, Jeffery D. Allen, and Peter Allen. Honorary pallbearers will be great-grandchildren and their mothers, and Keegan Lewis Allen.
