Charles David Longanecker Sr. of Leakey TX. passed away on March 21, 2022 at his home at the age of 93.
He was born November 23, 1928 in Lawrence Kansas to Lola and Howard Longanecker. He grew up on their family farm and graduated from Lawrence Memorial High school in 1946. He was well liked by the farmers for his hard working skills but decided farm life was not for him so he enrolled in the Lawrence business college where he specialized in shorthand and typing. Upon graduation he began working for the Santa Fe Railway in Lubbock TX. in 1950 as a steno/clerk. Shortly after he was called into the U.S. Army , January 29,1951 to serve in the Korean War. He was assigned as Personal Secretary to a Brigadier General while in Germany.
After his 2 yr. enlistment he took a job as the Chief Clerk with the Frisco railway in Amarillo TX., where he met the love of his life, Margaret Durrett. They married on February 11, 1954. They were blessed to have forty seven years together. Charlie worked for Sears for 20 years and retired in 1990. He was good at woodworking and craftmanship and delightedly took on the challenge of building their house and retirement home on the Frio river, quite an accomplishment for him.. He had a zest for life and enjoyed playing the guitar, singing in the church choir with Margaret as well as them being in a mixed quartet known as the HYMNS & HERS. Later in life he gave his heart to protecting and rescuing abandoned dogs, giving homes to quite a few and finding homes for others. They gave him alot of joy, companionship and love especially meaningful in his older years.
He was a man of faith and his favorite motto was "In God We Trust". He lived a life serving others, loving his family and friends and he left this life giving to others. He made us laugh often with his great sense of humor. He rarely complained other than to say “ T’aint fun getting old.” He was deeply loved by family and friends and will be deeply missed.
