Charles (“Tip”) Edward Tipton of Uvalde, Texas, passed away peacefully on February 16, 2024, at the age of 91. Charles was born on September 26, 1932, in Alvarado, Texas, to Earl F. and Egeria B. (Welch) Tipton. He was preceded in death by his parents and younger siblings, Lawrence W. and Joe E. Tipton.
Charles graduated from Alvarado High School in 1950, and joined the U. S. Navy in 1951, where he served as an Aviation Machinist’s Mate. In 1952, he married Patsy June Mahanay, who joined him at his duty station in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. He was then assigned to Corpus Christi Naval Air Station where he completed his service and was honorably discharged in 1955. The couple then moved to Dallas, Texas, where Charles joined the Dallas Fire Department and served the public until his retirement in 1982, having reached the rank of Battalion Fire Chief.
Charles was a friend to many, and appreciated a good joke and a great game of golf. Over the past 41 years, he and Patsy thoroughly enjoyed traveling, particularly in Colorado and Texas, making wonderful friends along the way. Charles and Patsy were not only travel companions, they were life companions for 71 years, an achievement in marriage not often seen today. Indeed, the companionship continues as Charles’ dear Patsy joined him within weeks of his passing. They are deeply missed.
Charles is survived by his nephews, Jeff, Todd, Chip, and Joe Tipton, Jr., their families, and a host of beloved friends from his days with the Dallas Fire-Rescue Department, his many travels, and his close neighborhood community in Uvalde.
A memorial service for the couple will be held on March 27, 10:00 A.M., at Rushing-Estes-Knowles Mortuary, 220 S. Getty, Uvalde, Texas. To honor Charles’ life of service, the family requests donations be made to a firefighter or veteran’s charity of your choice.
