C. G. Punk Graham passed away Tuesday morning at 6:15 a.m. at Methodist Hospital in San Antonio. Services will be held on Sunday, November 9th, at the Rushing-Estes-Knowles Mortuary at 2:00 p.m. followed by a graveside ceremony at the Sabinal Cemetery in Sabinal, Texas.
Born in Sabinal, Texas, on March 5, 1929, son of Claude Murray Graham and Mildred Hicks Graham, Punk grew up on ranches throughout the hill country between Sabinal and Utopia. He attended Trio School and Sabinal High School, and graduated from Knippa High School in 1946.
Punk married Mary Jane Carter from Knippa in 1952 and settled down in Uvalde where he began working for the city as a meter reader. They had four children; Janet, Clay, Bobby, and Virginia. Punk worked for the City of Uvalde for 40 years where he eventually became the superintendent of both the gas and water departments. Working for the city made Punk highly visible; it seemed everyone knew and loved him. He was a founding leader and lifetime member of the Texas Gas Association. Punk served for 25 years as a volunteer fireman in Uvalde. He also enjoyed coaching his sons little league baseball teams and leading their scout dens.
After retiring from the city, Punk enjoyed his favorite hobbieslistening to old-time fiddle music, fishing, dancing, telling stories, and watching his grandchildren play.
He was preceded in death by his two sons, Clay and Bobby Graham. He is survived by one brother, Claude Graham of Utopia, and two sisters, Ethel Maude Weynand of Utopia and Marie Lee of Magalia, California. Also surviving are two daughters, Janet Theberge of Fredericksburg and Virginia Bigler of San Antonio, and a daughter-in-law, MLiss Graham of Uvalde. Punk had nine grandchildren; Merri Darr, Stephen, P.J., and Karen Theberge, Chris and Jon Graham, and Alan, Scott, and Allison Bigler, and five great-grandchildren; Ashton and Logan Darr, and Orin, Trysten, and Jocelyn Theberge.
