Cresencia “Kissie” R. Mendeke, 93, of Uvalde, died on September 9, 2019 in Uvalde.
She was born on April 1926, in Uvalde to Juan B. Reyes and Clara T. Reyes. She is preceded by her husband, Bernel Mendeke and two sisters, Refugia Flores and Esther Zapata, also 4 brothers, Lidio, Lupe, J.B. and Pat Reyes.
Kissie was a legal secretary to her cousin, Rodolfo R. Flores before moving to Long Beach, California where she became a legal secretary to Douglas Bowing Aircraft.
She and her husband Bernel then became real estate brokers until they retired and moved back to Uvalde where she became a community activist. She was involved in saving the Nicholas Street School or West Garden School from being demolished but receiving recognition on the National Registry of historic places.
Kissie was very instrumental in Uvalde providing meals to senior citizens. She also walked the streets of Uvalde County in support of those political candidates she believed in, including Charlie Mendeke, the Uvalde County Sheriff. She had influence with many people in Uvalde and she helped many Uvaldeans.
Kissie will be sorely missed, not only by her family, but all of Uvalde County.
Visitation will begin on Tuesday at 12:00 p.m. at Rushing-Estes-Knowles Mortuary. A rosary will be held on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. at Rushing-Estes-Knowles Mortuary. A mass of Christian burial was held on Wednesday, September 11, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Uvalde.
Interment will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be members from the Mendeke and Reyes families.
