Dora Diaz Martinez, 91, of Austin, Texas, passed away on November 20, 2019 after a short illness.
The second oldest of a family of ten, Dora was born on June 28,1928, to Hortencia and Salome Diaz in Knippa, Texas. The family moved to Uvalde in 1934 where she, along with her other siblings attended Sacred Heart School and Uvalde High School. After graduating in 1947 she and her sister, Concepcion, worked at Dickies until she began work for Oscar Martinez at his finance business as head bookkeeper. It was there that she met her future husband, Eligio (Lico) Martinez. They were married on September 30, 1951 in Uvalde. In her later years after retirement, she subsequently worked at Lacks, where she was fondly remembered as kind, calm and dependable.
Always family oriented, she and her husband were parents to four children, George, Deborah, Monica, and Carlos. These children joined a large number of aunts,uncles, cousins and grandparents for family gatherings, visits, and celebrations. Faith played a strong role in her life, as all her children were raised in the church and attended Sacred Heart School as she did.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, nephew, and four of her siblings.
She is survived by daughters, Deborah Martinez, Monica and her husband Paul Slutes and their sons Christopher and Tristen of Austin; her sons, George Martinez and his wife Cecilia of Uvalde and their children, Jason Martinez of LaVernia, Matthew Martinez of Uvalde, Amanda Martinez and Andrew Martinez and son Andrew Jr. of San Antonio, Carlos Martinez and his wife Lisa of New Braunfels; brothers, Salome Diaz,Jr. and wife Olga, Tony Diaz and wife Ruby all of Fort Worth; Bob Diaz and wife Alicia of McKinney; sisters Stella Ozuna and husband Jesus of Seguin, Mary Helen Bates of Uvalde; special family friend, Irene Rositas of Austin; numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great nephews of Austin, San Antonio, Marion, McKinney, Fort Worth, Houston, Crystal City, San Marcos, Corpus Christi, Uvalde, and in the Valley.
Pall bearers were Jason Martinez, Matthew Martinez, Andrew Martinez, Paul Slutes and Christopher Slutes. Honorary pallbearers were George Martinez, Carlos Martinez, Andrew Martinez, Jr. and Tristen Slutes.
A rosary will be held on Sunday and Monday at 7:00 p.m. at Rushing-Estes-Knowles Mortuary. A funeral mass will be held on Tuesday, November 26, 2019 at 10;00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Uvalde Catholic Cemetery.
