Doris Laning

Doris Frances Laning of Uvalde passed away on August 20, 2011 in Uvalde Memorial Hospital at the age of 90. She was born on March 21, 1921 to Loyd and Kathleen Sherwood Williams. She graduated from Crystal City High School and earned an English degree from Trinity University. She married J.A. Jake Laning, Jr. on May 16, 1942 in Crystal City, TX. Doris was a devout woman of faith who enjoyed over 30 years of weekly fellowship with her Womens Prayer Group. Although afflicted with dystonia for 56 years, Doris always had a smile on her face and words of encouragement for others. She was an inspiration to all who knew her. She enjoyed gardening and taking care of her yard and indoor plants. She is survived by two daughters, Sherry Herndon and husband, Dr. Elmer Herndon D.V.M. of Uvalde and Landra Dobbs and husband, Joe of Richardson, TX two sons, Lane Loyd Laning and wife, Patricia of Brownwood, TX and Buck Laning and wife, Kim of Uvalde sister, Rosemary Oswalt of Kerrville 9 grandchildren, Whitney Cortner Juston Dobbs Barton Dobbs Nicholas Laning Jason Laning Chelsea Laning James J.J. Laning Zack Laning and Kathleen Laning two greatgrandchildren, Ryan Elizabeth Dobbs and Creed Dobbs and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 69 years, J.A. Jake Laning. The family will greet guests on Friday from 6:008:00 PM at RushingEstesKnowles Mortuary. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 27, 2011 at 10:00 AM at the First United Methodist Church in Uvalde with burial to follow in Hillcrest Cemetery. Rev. Scott Bradford will officiate. Pallbearers will be her grandsons, Juston Dobbs, Barton Dobbs, Jason Laning, James J.J. Laning, Zack Laning, and Nicholas Laning. Honorary pallbearers will be her sister, Rosemary Oswalt Dr. Elmer Herndon, Joe Dobbs, Billie Jean Davis and the Tuesday Womens Prayer Group. Memorial donations may be made to the Faith in Action Campaign at First United Methodist Church, 301 N. High St., Uvalde, TX 78801.
