Doris Schipper

September 22, 1924 — January 29, 2015

Guy P. Schipper passed away at home on January 29, 2015. Among the many things that she was known for was portraying Darla in the "Our Gang" comedy series. This came about due to a Cutest Baby Contest that allowed two, three, and four year old children to participate. The contest was sponsored by Meadow Gold Milk. The prize for winning the contest was a trip to Hollywood to appear on the "Our Gang" comedy series, which would later become "The Little Rascals". Jackie Coogan was one of the originals and he, Huntz Hall, and Leo Gorcy later became "The Bowery Boys". She worked at a radio station in Oklahoma City to play background music during ASCAP's fight with Joe Petrillo in 1938. This was because she could write her own music. She played both classical and folk music. In junior high school, she created a newspaper called the "Huber Rumor". Since they did not want to let her be on the school newspaper, this ran three editions. After talking to her father, they allowed her on the "Fourth Estates" which was the school paper. At Classen High School in Oklahoma City, she was also a member of the school paper. During her senior year, she had a weekly school page in the "Daily Oklahoman". She performed at the Oklahoma City Conservatory of Music. During those years, she was either playing the piano, writing, shooting pictures, or playing tennis. She then moved back to California, where she sang as a "fill in" at the Hollywood Palladium a few times. The fill in at the time was Louie Prima. He played intermission for Jimmy Dorsey. They were then transferred to Philadelphia where she sang with Louie Miller at Ciro's in Philadelphia, adding her own touches to the St. Louis blues. They then went back to Oklahoma City where she sang at Jack Monroe's Club and the Blue and Gold Room at the old Huckins Hotel. A friend told her about a job proofreading at the Daily Oklahoman so she went back to the newspaper business. Eventually, she got a job as an Ad Clerk. She later moved to the Muskogee Phoenix and Times Democrat. She later moved to Laredo, TX to work for the Laredo Morning Times as an advertising salesperson. After working there for many years and training six advertising managers, she finally accepted the job of Advertising Director. She was one of the few females in Texas who was good enough to get welcomed into the prestigious Who's Who of American Women (Seventh Edition). She moved to KGNS-TV for a short while, where she wrote and produced commercials. She learned about TV operations and later moved to Vumore as Station Manager for Channel 5. She showed old movies and travelogues, sold commercials, and got the station up and running. In 1983, she earned the title of Marketing Director where she handled advertising, promotions, sales programs, converter recovery, programming, and occasionally disgruntled customers. She wrote the "From Where I Sit" column for the Real American in Leakey until 1991. She retired in 1993 and moved to Uvalde where she wrote a few articles for the Uvalde Leader-News. Guy P. Schipper was born Doris J. Huber on September 22, 1924. She was an amazing lady. She is preceded in death by her parents, William Guy Huber and Dorothy Bertha Briggs Huber, and her husband, Elmer M. Schipper. She is survived by three daughters, Margaret Palermo; Patricia deAnda and husband, Andy; Michelle L. Cobo and husband, Fred; son, Allen Christopher Schipper; 15 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-grandchild. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 7, 2015 at 2:00 PM at Rushing-Estes-Knowles Mortuary.
