Dr. Coen Hollis "Dusty" Huddleston, DVM died May 19, 2015 at his residence. A graveside service on Monday, May 25 at 9:30 am will be followed by a memorial service at 10:30 am at the First Presbyterian Church.
He was born November 29, 1921 in Rochester, Texas to William Ellis Huddleston and Nancy Cross Huddleston. Dusty grew up in Sabinal, Texas where he learned to play the harmonica while sitting atop a mule-drawn cultivator.
As a member of B Troop Cavalry, Corps of Cadets he graduated from Texas A&M as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 1944. He got the name "Dusty" because he was the shortest in the troop, so rode last in the cavalry column. He was the first veterinarian to practice in the Uvalde County and surrounding area. On January 13, 1946 he married Edith Barnett from Uvalde. They were married sixty-five years, until Edith's death in June 2011. Dusty started the program of rabies vaccination in Uvalde in 1944 and participated in the annual rabies drive for six decades. In honor of that service the city fathers declared March 1, 2010 "Dr. Dusty Huddleston Day."
Dusty was drafted and commissioned as a reserve Captain of the Veterinary Corps during the Korean War, but the war ended before he was called to active duty.
He was preceded in death by wife Edith, his parents, brother Travis and sister Leola Ricks Morgan.
He is survived by sons Will Huddleston and wife Elizabeth McAninch of San Francisco, Bob Huddleston and wife Beth Casal Huddleston of San Antonio, Mike Huddleston and wife Karen Winkle Huddleston of Uvalde, and daughter Holly and husband Colonel (Ret.) Ty Smith of San Antonio.
