Elia Edna Hernandez of Uvalde passed away on July 25, 2017 at the Methodist Hospital in San Antonio at the age of 77. She was born on March 14, 1940 in La Pryor to Eliseo and Maria (Guajardo) Garcia. She married Felix G. Hernandez on December 5, 1959 in Uvalde.
She is survived by her daughter Velma Hernandez Henry and husband, Rick of Austin; sons, Leroy Hernandez and wife, Marilyn of Denver, Colorado and Michael Hernandez and wife, Azenette of San Antonio; sister, Elva G. Ibarra of Uvalde; brother, Guillermo Garcia of Uvalde; grandchildren, Alyssa Hernandez, Sarah Hernandez, Ashley Hernandez, Kathryn Hernandez, Casey Henry and wife, Kelsey; great grandchildren, Kaelyn Henry and Cooper Henry; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; sisters, Susana Enriquez and Minerva Torres; brothers, Esequiel Garcia and Benito Garcia.
Mrs. Hernandez worked 30+ years for the Uvalde Consolidated School District as a teacher. After her retirement she worked with the adult literacy program at the correctional center in Uvalde. For the past several years she served as a volunteer at the Uvalde Memorial Hospital, along with various other organizations.
A rosary will be held on Saturday and Sunday at 7:00 p.m. at Rushing-Estes-Knowles Mortuary. A funeral mass will be held on Monday, July 31, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Robert Hernandez, Ruben Hernandez, Willie Garcia Jr., Moses Hernandez, Joe Ibarra Jr., and Casey Henry.
