Elpidio Flores

Elpidio (Pio) Flores, 84, passed away Wednesday, July 8, 2015. He was born in Uvalde on March 4, 1931 to Raymundo and Esther Flores.
He leaves his wife of 60 years, Mary (Maruca) Romo Flores; his daughters Cynthia Jo Flores-Martinez and her husband Mike Martinez, of San Antonio and Sylvia Flores of San Antonio. His sons; Richard Flores and his wife Dolores of Uvalde, George R. Flores and his wife Rachel of Houston, Michael Flores and his wife Rosemary of San Antonio; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; Brothers and sister Raymundo Flores, Elias Flores, Delia Flores Gonsalez, and Armando Flores and many close friends and relatives.
Elpidio was preceded in death by his parents, his son John Elpidio Flores, and brother Reynaldo Flores.
After graduating from Uvalde High School in 1951, he joined the U.S. Air Force. He served in the Korean War during his time of service. While still an active member of the armed service, he was involved in a tragic accident and lost his sight. He returned to Uvalde and married his High School Sweetheart Mary Romo at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. After losing his sight, he attended Chicago for blind veterans rehabilitation. He then went to New Jersey for training with a seeing eye guide dog named Flora. He could be seen around Uvalde walking the streets with this dog that meant so much to him.
His will to succeed led him to attend St. Mary's University in San Antonio, Texas, graduating in 1958 with a bachelor's degree in Sociology. After receiving his degree he sold Insurance for Fred Everett Insurance Company. He not only took pride in his business, but truly relished the friends he made during his time in business. Elpidio also worked as the Head Start Director and worked closely with the program.
Pio was often asked to provide inspirational and motivational talks about his experiences and his determination to succeed no matter the consequences. He was the American Legion post #479 Commander on several occasions and held other offices along with being a Life Time member. He was very dedicated to the community and also served as a board member of the Uvalde County Clinic Inc. and also member of the Optimist club for several years, and life member of Disabled American Veterans.
A rosary was held on Saturday, July 11, 2015 at 7 p.m., and another Rosary will be held Sunday, July 12, 2015 at 7 p.m. at Rushing-Estes-Knowles Mortuary. Following with Mass on Monday, July 13, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with interment following Hillcrest Cemetery.
