Quinna Ernestine Jessup Carson, born on September 16, 1932 in Iraan, Texas, the youngest child of Quinna Catherine (Fred) and Ernest Houser Jessup, passed to the heavens on August 17, 2019. There she was reunited with her husband, Charles W. Carson Jr. whom she married on March 7, 1953. The couple had two children, Teena Hughs and husband Feller and Charles W. Carson III and wife Pamela. Affectionally known as Gran-Gran to her family, she is also survived by her grandchildren Will James Hughs and wife Peyton, Lauren Hughs, Ellen Klukowski and husband Tom, Emily Schwertner and husband Tyler, and Charles W. Carson IV. She is also survived by her lone great granddaughter Violet Rose Schwertner. In addition, Ernestine is survived by her sister-in-law Bobbie Jessup and daughters Lesa Pepper and Melanie Yeaman; sister-in-law Lucille Hutcherson and children Ray, Charles Kirk, and Elizabeth. Additional survivors include her nephews John F. Carson Jr., Roger Eugene Carson, Robert Thornberg, and nieces Lanelle Thornberg Killion and Karen Thornberg Garcia.
In addition to her husband and parents, Ernestine was preceded in death by her brother Lowell Jessup and sister Marjorie Thornberg and nephew Ernest Allen Thornberg. Ernestine taught school in Brackettville and Uvalde for 26 years and is best remembered for her “How a Bill Becomes Law” exam. Upon retiring from her teaching profession, Ernestine devoted the remainder of her life to community service, with the Barksdale Methodist Church and the Daughters of the Republic of Texas being just two of many organizations.
A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, August 20, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. at the Barksdale Cemetery. Pallbearers will be her grandsons Will James Hughs and Charles W. Carson IV, her grandsons-in-law Tom Klukowski and Tyler Schwertner, and her two nephews John F. Carson Jr. and Roger Eugene Carson.
