Francis J. Gremmel, 81, of Uvalde, died April 4, 2007 after a 9-month battle with cancer.
He was born in Granite City, Il. to Christopher T. Gremmel and Octavia Sterling Gremmel. He was raised in Muscatine, IA. after his parents
orced. He lived with his grandparents until the age of 12 years when he went to live with his father. While his father worked on the Wabash Railroad, he stayed with a neighbor. When his dad was diagnosed with TB, he remained with a friend while his dad was treated in Arizona.
At the age of 17, he enlisted in the Marine Corp. for a 2 year enlistment. He participated in action against the enemy on Guam and Okinawa.
After the Marine Corp, he moved to Uvalde with his Father. He attended SWTJC for 1 year and worked at Horners Hardware.
While working at Horners, he met and married his wife, Lorene Helbig of Knippa.
He was President of the Uvalde Little League for 3 years and remained active in the Little League for many years. He was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church, holding numerous office positions until diagnosed with diabetes and neuropathy.
He worked 28 years at the Uvalde Post Office ending with Supt. of Mails. He was a relief carrier for Sam Rumfield carrying the mail from Uvalde to Batesville, TX.
He was preceded in death by his father and mother.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years; daughters, Patti and husband, Russell Nowell of Brackettville; Mary Latimer of Uvalde; Laura and husband, Harry Rauch of Marion; and son, Chris and wife Barbara, of Bellville. He is also survived by grandchildren Cameron Nowell of North Pole, AK; Ashely Rauch of Dallas; Courtney, Blake, and Bailee Gremmel of Bellville and 1 great- grandchild, Elizabeth Nowell.
Funeral services will be held Monday, April 9 at 2:00 PM at Trinity Lutheran Church. Interment following at the Knippa Cemetery.
Pallbearers are Harry Rauch, Russell Nowell, Richard Lynch, Henry Scheide, Gaylon Trees and Louis Dicke.
Honorary pallbearers are Frank Harrison, James Dry, Leonard Heisner, Jack Moreland, John Langner, Charles Carson, Dr. Ralph Wells, Dr. Dean McCracken and all classmates of SWTJC 1946-1949.
Contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society, Trinity Lutheran Church Memorial Fund or the charity of their choice.
