George Linkhart Wentz of Uvalde passed away on November 24, 2016 at his residence at the age of 83. He was born on November 28, 1932 in Uvalde to Frank Elton Wentz and Cecil Eiband Wentz. He graduated from Uvalde High School, and attended Shreiner Institute and the University of Texas. He married Sherley Askew in Uvalde on May 30, 1953. George was a lifetime member of First United Methodist Church, serving as a board member under several pastors. He was a member of Searchers Sunday School Class. He was a member and Past Master of Uvalde Masonic Lodge, as well as a lifetime member of Uvalde Rotary Club. He was a member and Past President of Uvalde Chamber of Commerce. George served on City Council and was Mayor Pro-Tem. He was a member of Roadrunners Club and American Legion Post #26. He was an honorary member of Uvalde Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. He was an active participant during the Briscoe for Governor campaign. He was made an Admiral in the Texas Navy as well as named an Ambassador of Good Will. After his discharge from the Army in 1955, he owned Wentz Flower Shop until he retired in December 1994. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Sherley Wentz; brother-in-law, Michael Black of Uvalde; sister-in-law, Barbara Williamson and husband, Jerry of San Marcos; cousins, George W. Eiband and wife, Cecilia of Houston, Johanna Whaley of Huntsville, Mary Hauff and husband, Steve of Port Angeles, WA, and Jesse Roy Hart of Seguin. He was preceded in death by his parents; grandparents; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. Cremation was under the direction of Rushing-Estes-Knowles Mortuary. A memorial graveside service will be held on Thursday, December 1, 2016 at 3:00 PM in Hillcrest Cemetery with a reception following at First United Methodist Church. Rev. Steve Peyton will officiate.
