Miss Grace Rose of Uvalde passed away on September 8, 2008 at the age of 96. Grace Aileen Rose was born February 18, 1912 to Mr. and Mrs. George Rose, nee Nettie Salmon. She was born in Kinney County on a ranch owned by her grandfather, David Rose. The Rose family members owned several ranches in Kinney County, and Miss Rose was involved with her father's ranch, the George Rose RAnch, all her life. Miss Rose wasthe eldest of four daughters and went to school in Brackettville, Texas. She graduated from high school in Brackettville, then went to Sul Ross University in Alpine, TX. She obtained a Bachelor's degree, and then a Master's degree in education from Sul Ross University and was a school teacher at Mudcreek and then Yselta. Miss Rose then moved to El Paso and spent many years living and teaching in El Paso.
After her father suffered a debilitating stroke, Miss Rose then moved to Uvalde to be closer to her parents, and taught in Uvalde at Robb Elementary School for several years before retiring to care for her father. After his death, she then took care of an uncle, Mr DAve Rose, for several years until his death. In 1979, Miss Rose took a month long trip to Scotland, where she visited the ancient Rose family castle of Kilvarock which is near Inverness in northern Scotland. The Roses and their descendants can trace their family history from the 12th century and the trip was one of the highlights of her life.
Miss Rose enjoyed organic gardening, was a Grandmaster at bridge, and took an active role in continuing to operate her parents' ranch after their deaths. The George Rose Ranch in Kinney County is still family owned and operated by descendants of George and Nettie Rose and Dave Rose. Miss Rose was a member of the First United Methodist of Uvalde, and a member of the Genealogy Research Center at Bringham Young University and was active in the Uvalde Genealogy Society. She was was also a member of the Texas Retired Teacher Association and a lifetime alumni of Sul Ross State University.
Miss Rose was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Rose, and all three of her sisters, Helen Radloff of Uvalde, Ruth Beard of Alpine and Georgia Nell Pepper of Maine. She is survived by several nieces and nephews, including Jimbo Beard of Brackettville, and Carla Radloff King of Uvalde. Cremation is under the direction of Rushing-Estes-Knowles Mortuary. A Memorial Service will be held on September 15, 2008 at Rushing-Estes-Knowles Chapel
