Greg Smyth

David Gregory Smyth was born in Uvalde, Texas, to Lewis Miller Smyth, Jr. and Mary Nell Robinson Smyth on May 3, 1937 and died on August 6, 2016. He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents and several aunts, uncles and cousins and is survived by his children and grandchildren.

Mr. Smyth's career included professional land surveying, heavy construction supervision, inspection and layout. He was also involved in land development and sales. He began his surveying experience in February, 1956 and later served as director and officer of the State's professional society for thirteen years and was elected by the membership as the President of this society in 1996 & 1997. He was later appointed by Governor Perry to two six year terms on the states regulatory board, The Texas Board of Professional Land Surveying, and was appointed Chairman to this office by Governor Perry during his second six year term.

Mr. Smyth was highly esteemed by his fellow surveyors and was considered an expert by his peers in river boundaries and retracement of historic ancient original surveys. Along with a few other prominent surveyors, Mr. Smyth presented two seminars annually to teach retracement of original surveys and the gradient boundary techniques along with surveying ethics and standards.

Mr. Smyth began his surveying company in 1977 in Frio County and moved the company to his home town of Uvalde in the year 2003 where he renewed his membership in St. Philip's Episcopal Church and renewed his friendship with many longtime friends.

During his years in Frio County Mr. Smyth served as Member and President of the Dilley Independent School Board and also formed the Committee that was successful in bringing the Briscoe State Prison to the outskirts of Dilley, Texas.

During his career Mr. Smyth received numerous awards from the Texas Society of Professional Surveyors for his exemplary surveying performance and he will be missed by his many friends in the surveying profession.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, August 10, 2016 at 10:00 AM at St. Philip's Episcopal Church with burial following in Hillcrest Cemetery. Rev. Mike Marsh will officiate. Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Alex Gifford, James Caton, Charley Caton, River Miller, Aidan Brotherton, and Trevor Smyth.
