Guillermo "Willie" G. Vela of Uvalde passed away on February 21, 2018 at his residence at the age of 98. He was born on June 24, 1919 in Knippa to Abelino R. and Juanita (Gonzales) Vela.
He served in the US Army during World War II under General Patton. He married Loretta Contreras in Uvalde on April 26, 1986.
He is survived by his wife of 31 years of Uvalde; daughters, Lila Hernandez and husband, Joe of Campwood, Anna M. Rocha and husband, Guillermo of San Antonio, Ella Mikulich and husband, John of Richmond, Nora Reyes of Benicia, California, and Ilda Hernandez and husband, Marcelo of Poteet, Melissa McDowell and husband, James of Austin ; son, Alfredo Vela and wife, Sylvia of Uvalde; sister, Francisca Alvarado of Lytle; and nephew, Andres Vielma, Jr of Uvalde; 29 grandchildren, 58 great grandchildren; 16 great- great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Herlinda Morales; son, Guillermo (Willie) Vela, Jr.; brother, Jesus Vela; sisters, Tomasa Gomez, Sara Fuentes and Herminia Vela; granddaughter, Herlinda Vela, grandson, Jimmy Criollos, and great grandson, Elijah Vela
A rosary will be held on Saturday and Sunday at 7:00 p.m. at Rushing-Estes-Knowles Mortuary. A funeral mass will be held on Monday, February 26, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Andres Vielma, Jr, Christopher Vela, Billy Gomez, Joe Criollos, Jose Angel Hernandez, Jr, Marcelo Two Feathers Hernandez, Aaron Olivarez, Ray Perez, Marshal Lee Gomez, and Alexander Lee Olivarez.
