Hortencia Garcia of Uvalde passed peacefully surrounded by her loving family on August 8, 2020 at Post-Acute Medical Specialty Hospital in San Antonio at the age of 75. Born on November 10, 1944, in George West, Texas she was one of 12 siblings born to Pedro and Andrea (Gutierrez) Garcia.
Hortencia met and then married the love of her life, Juan Garcia in Sinton, Texas on December 27, 1960. They traveled to many locations throughout the United States, working as migrant farmworkers before settling in Uvalde, Texas in the late seventies. They had 13 children and were married for forty-two years until the passing of her husband, Juan, on August 28, 2002. Hortencia cherished and appreciated her loving family. This was very apparent by the many home-cooked meals that she always had available at her home. She served her family not only with food but with love and care for her numerous grandchildren that often visited her home.
She leaves behind her children, Eddie Garcia and wife, Anita, Teresa Vasquez, and husband, Juan, Fernando Garcia and wife, Leticia, Angelita Luna and husband, Lupe, Jesus Garcia, Luisa Garcia, Juanita Castillo and husband, Pat, Adam Garcia, and wife, Cristina, Josie Garcia, Anita Estrada and husband, Oscar and Sara Lee Garcia all of Uvalde, Christina Abrego and husband, David, Jr. of Brownsville, Rachel Leija of San Antonio; sister, Oliva Sanchez of Mathis; brother, Porfirio Garcia of George West; 42 grandchildren; 52 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents; husband; siblings, Andres Garcia, Alejandro Garcia, Josephine Ruiz, Maria Amador, Amelia Sandoval, Adan Garcia, Alberto Garcia, Paula Martinez, and Carmen Garcia, son-in-law, Rosalio Camacho and daughter-in-law, Hortencia Arellano-Garcia.
Visitation will begin on Thursday, August 20, 2020, at 2:00 p.m. followed by a rosary at 6:00 p.m. at Rushing-Estes-Knowles Mortuary. A funeral mass will be held on Friday, August 21, 2020, at 10:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Cemetery.
