The gates of heaven opened and Irene Acree Sturm Mamaw was called home on July 1, 2009 at the age of 100. Irene was born on September 6, 1908 in Hastings, OK to Charles E. and Ida R. Nelson Acree and was along time resident of Uvalde, Texas. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter R. Sturm, her brother ODaniel Acree and two sisters, Elsie D. Oldham and Edna King. She is survived by her son, William R. Sturm and wife Nancy of Perry, GA and her daughter Dolores A. Sturm of Uvalde, Texas. She is also survived by her loving grandchildren, William R. Sturm Jr., and wife, Julie of Kansas; Karen Mode and husband, Floyd, of Arkansas; Leslie Sinyard of Georgia. She also had six great grandchildren, Sarah and Nancy Evans, Katie and Will Sinyard, and Kris and Patrick Sturm, plus a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Early in her childhood Irenes family moved to Uvalde where she attended grade school and graduated from Uvalde High School. She met and later married Walter R. Sturm on August 14, 1928, while he was in Uvalde on a job assignment; they were married for 63 years. After traveling extensively throughout the U.S., they retired in Uvalde in 1966. Since Walters death in 1991, Irene continued to live in her home by the Leona River with her daughter, Dolores and two dachshunds. She loved watching and feeding a variety of birds and wildlife. Her philosophy of life was Each day is a blessing so live it to the fullest; maintain a positive attitude and be kind to one another.
Irene rests with God in Heaven having His will on earth. She was a very giving, special and loved lady who will always be remembered for her positive attitude, sense of humor, generosity of heart and giving nature. She will be greatly missed by those who knew her and may she continue to be part of the lives she touched. She lived her life by the Golden Rule.
Funeral services will be conducted at the Rushing-Estes-Knowles Chapel on Sunday, July 5, 2009 at 2:00 PM with Rev. Jerry Scott of the First Baptist Church of Uvalde officiating. Interment will follow in the Uvalde Cemetery.
