Jerald John Mike Hawkes passed away at his residence in Sabinal on Monday, June 30, 2014 at the age of 86.
Jerald became known as Mike at age four when an uncle said Jerald John was too fancy a name for a little boy and called him Mike and the nickname stuck.
Mike was born on December 23, 1927 in Sabinal as the seventh of eight children born to Fred and Effie Hawkes.
His parents, four brothers, Fred Jr., Sam, Herbert and Earl, and two sisters, Beatrice Angelo and Nellie Pritchard, preceded him in death.
His wife of 58 years, June Hawkes, three sons, Michael and wife Jeanine of Sabinal, Dudley and wife Kirsten of Huntsville, and Roger of Houston, 8 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, one sister, Betty Jo Robinson of San Angelo and numerous nieces and nephews, survive him.
After graduating from Sabinal High School, Mike became a professional rodeo rider, traveling to rodeos all over the southwest, many times singing and playing the guitar for his entry fees. He met and married June on November 2, 1955 in Shrub Oak, New York, and returned to Sabinal and spent the next 30 years working for the Texas Highway Department.
A memorial service will be held at the Sabinal United Methodist Church at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 2, 2014.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Uvalde Hospice at 1038B Garner Field Rd., Uvalde, Texas 78801
