John Harris Flores Jr. of Uvalde passed away on March 25, 2021 at Methodist Specialty and Transplant in San Antonio at the age of 71. He was born on October 6, 1949 in Uvalde to John Harris Flores Sr. and Rosa Gonzales. He married Lillian De La Garza in San Marcos on September 2, 1971.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years of Uvalde; daughters, Selina Flores of Ft. Worth and Deborah Cecilia Flores of San Antonio; sons, John Flores III and Jason Lee Flores both of San Antonio; sister, Cynthia Jo Esparza of Eagle Pass; grandchildren, Eli Bravo and wife, Megan, Sammy Bravo and wife, Brittany, Joshua Flores, Jordan Flores and wife, Arayana, and Marisa Flores; great grandchildren, Evelyn Rose Falcon, Oliver James Bravo, Jackson Harris Bravo, Maggie Mae Bravo and Silas Bravo; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents; Rosa Gonzales Flores and John Harris Flores Sr. , father in law, Jesus De La Garza, brother in law, Porfirio Esparza and sister in law, Patricia Ann Hickey.
A lifelong resident of Uvalde, Flores graduated from Uvalde High School. He attended Southwest Texas Junior College before going on to Southwest Texas University in San Marcos.
He served on a variety of boards and organizations including Uvalde Housing Authority, Our Health clinic, Uvalde Little League Association and Sacred Heart Church Parish Council. He served as assistant Boy Scouts master and president of Sacred Heart School PTO.
He retired after 35 years working for the Texas Workforce Commission, the Department of Human Services, and Workforce Solutions with the Middle Rio Grande Workforce Board.
He was elected to City Council for District 2 in 2012 and proudly served for the past nine years. He was focused on keeping water rights local, fostering education opportunities for community youth, and operating a fiscally responsible and transparent city government. He worked to increase infrastructure upgrades in the community as a whole, so that less affluent areas were not left out.
Visitation will begin on Wednesday, April 7, 2021 at 1:00 p.m., followed by a rosary at 7:00 p.m. at Rushing-Estes-Knowles Mortuary. A funeral mass will be held on Thursday, April 8, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Cremation is under the direction of Rushing-Estes-Knowles Mortuary.
