John M.D.

A fine man has fallen - into heaven. On July 15, 2018, John Lottman Shudde was welcomed by Jesus. John was born November 21, 1930, to John August Shudde and Sophie Lottman Shudde in Houston, Texas. He was baptized and later confirmed at St. Matthews Lutheran Church in Houston, TX.

John graduated from Lamar High School in 1949, and enrolled at THE University of Texas. He was in the Naval ROTC and was President of the ATO fraternity. He graduated from the University of Texas with a business degree in 1953, and was commissioned an Ensign in the U.S. Navy, serving during the Korean War. He was promoted to Lt. JG. John and Raynice Eads married on April 2, 1955, and lived in San Francisco, CA, while he completed his service. After his discharge, they returned to Austin to complete 2 years of pre-medical studies.

While at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX, they welcomed their first son, Clayton Eads. John moved his young family to Uvalde to begin his medical practice in 1962. Daughter Rayann soon joined the family followed by a second son, William Frederick. Their youngest son, John Lottman, Jr, completed the family.

John's passion for his patients was evident in his practice of family medicine and anesthesiology for 53 years at Uvalde Memorial Hospital. He loved the entire hospital community and quietly impacted his coworkers and countless patients over the decades. He blessed the region with his work toward the building of Kate Marmion Regional Cancer Center. John ended his professional career as Director of Uvalde Hospice. After retirement, he continued to serve as a volunteer for Uvalde Hospice. Fittingly, John was privileged to receive the services of Uvalde Hospice during his final days.

John's love for the Uvalde area was seen in his delight of the outdoors, hunting, fishing, and livestock. His family often declared his medical profession supported his addiction of pecan orchards, native grasses, fence building, and sheep dogs. His generational legacy will endure because he introduced his grandchildren to the world of sheep, goats, and cattle. Shearing with Papa was a beloved annual tradition for many years.
John's first love however was the constant presence of Jesus in his life and the Word of God. His years serving and leading a Sunday School class at St. Phillips Episcopal Church were a joy. John also met for prayer and fellowship with other area businessmen at his office every Wednesday morning for over 50 years.

John was named Uvalde's Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year in 2009. He served on the Board of Directors for First State Bank. John also was a former member of The Rotary Club and the Uvalde City Council.

He was preceded in death by his parents. Left to cherish his memory are Raynice Shudde, his wife of 63 years, his sons Clayton of Houston, TX, Will and wife Sue of Ovalo, TX, Lottman and wife Donna of Brentwood, TN, and his daughter Rayann of Concan, TX as well as grandchildren, Reed, Annie, and Hallie Harrison, Rachael, Claire, John Mark, Annalyn and Sadie Shudde, and Hannah Grace and husband Adam Hall, Lottie and Emma Shudde. He is also survived by his sister Jane Schoen of Houston, TX as well as many nephews and nieces, cousins and a host of friends.

Pallbearers will be family members Clayton, Rayann, Will and Lottman as well as grandsons, Reed Harrison and John Mark Shudde; grandson-in-law, Adam Hall; and dear friends, Dr. Harry Watkins, Frank Mariscal, and Tommy Leonard. Honorary Pallbearers are the men who were closer than brothers: Harvey Smith, Ken Hennings, Ray Robison, Pete Perez, and all the men of his Wednesday Morning Prayer Circle.
Memorials may be made to St. Phillips Episcopal Church, St. Phillips Episcopal Day School, or Uvalde Memorial Hospice. Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints.
