Johnnie Mae Proctor passed into eternity on August 4, 2015 in Uvalde, Texas at the age of 91. Johnnie Mae was born in Uvalde, Texas to John J Anthon and Margaret Edmonds Anthon on August 1, 1924. She grew up in Uvalde on her parents' dairy farm. She graduated from Uvalde High School in 1942 and from Mary Hardin Baylor University in 1946 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics. She later received her Masters of Education degree from Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio, Texas. Johnnie Mae was a Home Economics teacher and Pep Squad sponsor in Dilley, Texas from 1946-1969. After this time she moved to Uvalde, Texas and was an elementary school teacher for the Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District until her retirement. Following retirement she remained an active member of the community. She spent a great deal of time teaching volunteer courses such as Drivers Education through AARP.
Johnnie Mae was a member of the First Baptist Church of Uvalde where her most cherished friends included those in her Sunday school class. She was a member of the First Baptist Church choir. She and her sister Katherine sang many duets for the church however Johnnie Mae and Katherine's first songs were sung in harmony with their father in his milking parlor. Their family loved singing Christian music and often sang at home with their mother, Margaret Anthon who also played the piano.
Johnnie Mae was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Katherine Anthon Collins and her brother Gerald Wayne Anthon. She is survived by her nephew Ronnie Collins and spouse Jane and nephew Dennis Collins, all of Uvalde, Texas and her niece Connie Collins and spouse Larry of San Antonio, Texas and many great nieces and nephews.
Johnnie Mae was known for her life-long passion for education. She exemplified the role of master educator. Through her work and commitment to the education of the youth of our community, she enriched the lives of countless area youth for generations. Following retirement, Johnnie Mae could be seen daily walking up and down North High Street here in Uvalde. Passing by, she greeted each person with a shy smile and a quiet hello. Johnnie Mae has been greatly missed by all of us for years now and will be missed for more to come.
A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, August 10, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Uvalde of Uvalde, Texas.
