Lamar Hicks of Uvalde passed away on August 25, 2017 in Colorado at the age of 79. He was born on November 10, 1937 in Camp Wood to John Melvin and Lela Welch Hicks. His early childhood years were spent in Camp Wood until 1948 when the family moved to Uvalde. He graduated from Uvalde High School in 1957 where he was active in football, baseball, and track as well as Future Farmers of America. He then attended South West Texas Junior College from which he graduated in 1959 with an Associate of Arts Degree. Lamar began a career in the auto parts business and later found the work that he truly loved in ranching and farming on the family ranch north of Batesville which he operated until his death. He was an active member of St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Cripple Creek, Colorado and St. Philip's Episcopal Church in Uvalde where he was a member of the board of the church's elementary school for several years. He also volunteered at the Uvalde Food Pantry and was a member of the Wintergarden Water and Soil Conservation District Board for well over 20 years. He coached Little League baseball in Uvalde for many years. Lamar is survived by his wife of 57 years, Alice Toombs Hicks of Uvalde; three children, Tim Hicks and wife, Sheryl of Boerne; Tina Hicks Klein and husband, Randy of Uvalde; and Jason Hicks and wife, Mica of Springtown, TX; nine grandchildren, Kyle Klein, Conrad Klein, Coleman Klein, Kyra Klein Routh and husband, Colton, Brandon Hicks and wife, Jenni, Justin Hicks, Katelyn Hicks, J. Hicks, and Grady Hicks; seven great-grandchildren, as well as many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, six brothers, and two sisters. A funeral service was held on Saturday, September 2, 2017 at St. Andrews Episcopal Church and interment was held on Saturday, September 9, 2017 at the family ranch cemetery.
