Lawrence Toombs

Lawrence Lee Toombs was born on February 22, 1949 in San Angelo, Texas, the firstborn child of Herbert E. L. and Gloria Callan Toombs. He attended Uvalde public schools and was a lifelong resident of the area since the age of three. He graduated from Texas A M University, where he was a major in agronomy.

After suffering decades of diabetes, he died at the family ranch home in Zavala County on Monday, March 26, 2012 due to complications of that illness.

After graduating from college, Lee returned to Uvalde and Zavala County where he was a farmer and rancher for many years. Lee was an accomplished outdoorsman who excelled at hunting, salt and freshwater fishing, target shooting, kayaking the Nueces and Devils River, cowboying, and riding his beloved mule Leona for pleasure. He was also an excellent and patient teacher of the many talents and skills he possessed. He was an avid reader and loved feeding and watching the javelins, many birds, and wildlife which came daily to the porch of the ranch house.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Gloria Callan Toombs.

He is survived by his father, Herbert E. L. Toombs, children Callan Lee Toombs, Kim and John Wright, Jeff Hawkes and Bryan Hawkes also by grandchildren Cargil and Lawson Wright and Harllie Hawkes and by Gail Cargil Toombs, the mother of his children. He is also survived by his sisters, Liza Toombs and Ann Alejandro, brotherinlaw Joe Alejandro, and his aunt and uncle Alice and Lamar Hicks, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and beloved friends.

Rosary was said for him at Sacred Heart Catholic Church at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, March 30.

Funeral Mass was celebrated by Fr. Wieslaw Iwaniec on Saturday morning March 31 at 10 A.M. Pallbearers were Cliff Chapman, Buzz Barton, John Wright, Fritz Coleman, Jim Coleman and Pete Farr.

He will be buried at the family cemetery at the Toombs ranch at a later date.
