Leona Faye Henry, 92, of Sabinal, went to Heaven Thursday, Oct. 17, 2024 in San Antonio. She was born on October 5, 1932 in Rising Star, Texas to Harvey Samuel Spurgeon and Leona Ennis Clifford Spurgeon. She married James Leslie Henry of Sabinal on August 4, 1950 in Uvalde. They were married 67 years before his passing March 23, 2018. She was best known as Gan Gan to her granddaughters and great-grandchildren and even to their friends.
She graduated from Uvalde High School in 1950, just a couple of months before getting married at the age of 17. She and Jimmy were active members of the First Baptist Church of Sabinal where she served on various committees throughout the years. She worked part-time as a grocery clerk, a bookkeeper, a cashier and a substitute teacher. She was known for her delicious pecan pie, winning Blue Ribbons in several baking contests. She was a very good cook. She loved to dance, to put puzzles together, to play dominoes, Scrabble, bingo and card games.
Faye is preceded in death by her husband Jimmy Henry, her parents Harvey and Leona Spurgeon, her sisters Wanda Stein (Clarence), Maxine Howard (Roland), Betty Muecke (Carrol Buttler), her brothers Lynn Spurgeon (Betty L), Sam Spurgeon, Herman Spurgeon, her sister and brother in-laws, Eleanor Henry White (Melvin) and Ray Henry (Melba).
Faye is survived by her son James Michael Henry (Cathy) of San Antonio and her daughter Diana Kay Henry Schwind (Steve) of Blanco, granddaughters Jessica Leigh Schwind McCarver (Ryan) of The Woodlands and Kelsey Alyse Schwind Delapena (Joaquin) of Blanco, great- grandchildren Camila Rose Delapena, 5 yr. and Maverick James Delapena, 15 mo. both of Blanco and Finley James McCarver, 4 yr. and Benjamin Patrick McCarver, 2 mo. both of The Woodlands, her sister Marjorie Spurgeon, of Junction, and sister-in-law Marcella Spurgeon, of San Antonio. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Friday, Oct. 25 at the Rushing-Estes-Knowles Funeral Home in Uvalde.
The funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26 at the First Baptist Church of Sabinal with pastors Monty Benson and Jordan LaBry, officiating. Burial will follow at the Sabinal Cemetery.
Pallbearers are Joaquin Delapena, Ryan McCarver, Ray Henry, Jake Henry, Spencer Ball and Maury Jackson. Honorary pallbearers are C.A. Stein, Jr, Joe Boyd, Martin Foster, Moises Martinez and Danny McFaddin.
