Linda Word

Linda Dyer Word of Knippa passed away on March 29, 2011 at her residence at the age of 68. She was born on March 8, 1943 in Marfa, TX to Jack and Sabina Dyer. She graduated from Marfa High School. She attended beautician school in Carlsbad, New Mexico and worked in beauty shops in Marfa and Alpine for several years. Linda married Billy Word on December 10, 1966. After operating her own beauty shop in Fort Davis for about two years, she moved to Laramie, Wyoming where she began her college career at the university. She continued her college studies at Southwest Texas Junior College in Uvalde and earned her bachelors and masters degrees from Sul Ross State University. Linda taught for the Knippa I.S.D. for twenty nine years. She served as the First Lady of Southwest Texas Junior College from 1990 until 1999. While serving in this capacity, she hosted an annual Christmas open house at the home of the college president. Linda retired from teaching in 2001 and assisted her husband with his cattle operation until 2009 when she was diagnosed with liver cancer. Linda was well known for her culinary skills and her generosity. She is survived by her husband of 44 years, Billy Word of Knippa her mother, Sabina Dyer Eaton of El Paso one brother, Jackie Dyer of El Paso and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father, Jack Dyer brother, John Dyer and nephew, Jamie Dyer. A rosary will be held on Thursday at 7:00 PM at the RushingEstesKnowles Chapel. Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 1, 2011, at 10:00 AM at the RushingEstesKnowles Chapel with burial to follow in Knippa Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Jackie Dyer Rocky Dyer Joey Dyer Jeff Dyer Wayne Word John Word and Nelson Word. Honorary pallbearers will be Lindas Beach Bum Buddies: Melissa Winn Joyce Winn Pat Hall Doris Jackson Nita Shackleford Ramona Zerr Paula Windham Merrill Ellis and Sammye Smallwood.
