Lora B. Garrison died after a brief illness on Nov. 5. 2017.
She was born March 25, 1926 at the Davis Ranch in NE Uvalde Co. to Bob Davis and Annie Lee Davis. With her seven brothers and sisters, Lora B. helped her parents run their Angora Goat operation.
Lora B. married Roger William Garrison on June 20, 1942 in Uvalde and the couple embarked on a thirty-year career in the Air Force. With their growing family they moved frequently throughout Texas, the United States and the world. Assignments took them to Nashville, Tn., Corpus Christi, Tx., San Antonio, Tx., Montgomery, Al., Bloomington, In., College Station, Tx., and Sumter, S.C. Overseas assignments included Guam, France and Thailand.
They returned to the Davis Ranch in 1971 where they built a home on Blanket Creek off FM 1050.
Lora B. was a home maker and milliner (having made hats for Lady Bird Johnson and Alice Roosevelt Longworth among other Washington luminaries).
After returning to the Hill Country she became interested in genealogy and the folk history of Frio Canyon pioneers. She began collecting oral histories which she published in regional publications and Texas Folklore Society books. In the 1980s she wrote a column called "Stomping Grounds" for the Uvalde Leader-News. Her interest in local history led her to become a professional story teller and over the years she made many appearances at schools, libraries and festivals to share her stories of the early pioneers of the Frio Canyon.
The Garrison home became a popular bed and breakfast inn in the 1980s. Guests returned often, and many became friends.
Honors included Woman of the Year by Texas Press Women in 1984. She was a past President of the Caddell-Smith Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas and the Texas Folklore Society. Board memberships included Board of Directors for the Alamo, Board of the French Legation Museum in Austin and Board of the Republic of Texas Museum.
Lora B. was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers and sisters, her sons David William Garrison and Roger Allen Garrison and her beloved husband of 58 years Roger William Garrison.
Survivors include daughter-in-law Judy Garrison of San Antonio, daughter Betty Gauche Roy and her husband Bert of Eagle Co., son John Garrison and his wife Cindy Alexander of Keller, Tx. and daughter LeAnn Sharp and her husband Anthony of Utopia, Tx.
Grand children include Paige Garrison, Michael Gauche, Lane Garrison, Bain Walker, Forrest Walker, Shelly Sharp, Kelly Sharp, Bregger Garrison and JesseLee Garrison.
