Louis Tafolla Castro, 91, of Smyrna, Delaware, died on May 5, 2019, at his residence.
A gathering for family and friends will be held Thursday, May 9, 2019 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Faries Funeral Home chapel, located at 29 South Main Street in Smyrna, Delaware.
A visitation will be held on May 16, 2019, at 8 a.m., followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m. in the chapel at Rushing-Estes-Knowles Mortuary. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Cemetery.
He was born on Nov. 17, 1927, in Uvalde to Maria Tafolla and Ysidro Castro.
The family says he lived a long and colorful life which began in Uvalde. He travelled the world and was able to experience many cultures through his service in the U.S. Air Force, where he retired with honor as a Tech Sergeant after 21 years. He worked as a teacher in the Smyrna School District in Delaware for 16 years, and he had many anecdotal stories he loved to tell.
After retiring, he enjoyed watching western movies, boxing and football, all of which kindled memories of his childhood and early adulthood. He avidly followed the political scene and eagerly shared his views.
Growing up in difficult times during the depression era gave him an appreciation for his family and nurtured his outreach towards others in need. He loved spending time with his family and watching his grandchildren and great-grandchildren grow.
Castro was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Patricia Castro; three brothers; and two sisters.
He is survived by his son, Robert Castro and wife, Kathleen, of Smyrna, Delaware; daughter, Renee Castro of Camden, Delaware; sister, Anna Rivera of Uvalde; two grandchildren, Nicholas Castro and wife, Karen, and Maria Correll and husband, Rob; six great-grandchildren, Chloe Castro, Dominic Castro, Chase Correll, Leah Correll, Colton Castro and Violet Correll; and numerous nieces and nephews, including Anna Maria Lopez and husband, Tommy, and Xavier Reyes and wife, Patricia, with whom the family says he was very close.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the Smyrna-Clayton Lions Club, 545 South Carter Road, Smyrna, DE 19977.
