Lucille Blakeney

Lucille Williamson Blakeney, 100, died at the Amistad Nursing and Rehab Center on June 26, 2008, after having previously resided at 214 Martin St. for ten years. She was born November 4, 1907, in Devine, Texas to Lena Redus and William Montgomery Williamson. Blakeney graduated in 1929 from the University of North Texas at Denton then known as the College of Industrial Arts CIA. After receiving her Bachelor of Arts Degree, She taught in the public high school in Natalia, Texas. On June 23, 1934, she married William N. Bill Blakeney in Devine, Texas. He preceded her in death in 1992. The Blakeney family lived in towns throughout Texas where her husband pursued his civil engineering career with the Texas State Highway Department. During the World War II years, the family resided in Oklahoma and New York while Bill served in the United States Army. Upon discharge from the Army in 1946, the Blakeneys returned to Texas where Bill resumed his career with the Texas State Highway Department, eventually moving to Uvalde in 1950. Blakeney was a full-time homemaker and was active in Uvalde bridge clubs and Uvalde High School P.T.A. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Uvalde. Blakeney is survived by two daughters, Jane Boyce and husband, Ralph of Utopia, and Jo Anne Curry and husband, John of Odessa. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Bill Williamson and one sister, Jane Herring of Devine, Texas. Also, surviving are five grandchildren, Blake Curry and wife, Tanda, of Odessa; Randall Curry and wife, Diana of Mansfield; Marianne Berban and husband, Greg of Seguin; Jana Boyce of Denver, Colorado; and Jaye Lynn Wright and husband, Sean of Canadian, Texas. Seven great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild. Graveside services will be held Saturday, June 28, 2008 at 10:00 AM at Hillcrest Cemetery with Rev. Jerry Scott of the First Baptist Church officiating.

The family suggests memorials to Uvalde First Baptist Church or the El Progresso Memorial Library in Uvalde.
