Spurgeon was born October 23, 1919 in Strawn, Tx. to the late George Harvey Samuel and Leona Ennis Clifford Spurgeon. He was the second child of seven brothers and sisters. He married Elizabeth Betty Louise Mang on August 9, 1946 in Uvalde. She preceded him in death April 19, 1999. Lynn resided in Uvalde most of his life. He was an avid golfer and won the City Championship many times. He won the 4th of July Championship in 1971, and became the only Father and Son to win the Lloyd Bell trophy in 1993 when son Cary won the title. He was also well-known in his earlier years for his roller skating abilities, his expertise in water well drilling and later on, his knowledge of arrowheads.
He joined the Army of the United States, later called the Army Air Corps on December 29, 1941 and was honorably discharged as a Technical Sergeant on October 13, 1945. Upon his return from World War II, he began drilling water wells with his dad in the Uvalde area and they formed Spurgeon Drilling Company in 1948, a company now owned and operated by his son, Cary.
