Manuel Luna, Jr., 80, of Uvalde passed away on August 26, 2023, at Uvalde Memorial Hospital.
He was born on November 28, 1942, in Peñitas, Texas to Elida (Chapa) and Manuel Luna.
He married Guadalupe Farias on May 30, 1964, in Peñitas, Texas.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years of Uvalde; two daughters, Elida Luna and husband, Gabriel Jasso and Melissa Luna Lopez and husband, Miguel Angel all of Uvalde; son, Manuel G. Luna and wife, Norma of Uvalde and Ricardo Luna and wife, Yvette of Edcouch, two sisters, Cristina Cavazos of McAllen and Velia Rivera of Peñitas; five grandchildren, Heather Lynette Luna, Miguel Lopez, Jr., Michelle Lopez, Callie Noel Luna, and Melinda Lopez; seven great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Irma Martinez and Dora Lopez, and grandson, Manuel “Manny” C. Luna, Jr.
Manuel graduated as the Salutatorian of La Joya High School Class of 1961. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Engineering from Texas Tech University and worked with the USDA Soil Conservation Service/Natural Resources Conservation Service for 36 years. He began his career in Mission and worked in Raymondville, Lubbock, and Victoria before his final transfer to Uvalde. As a member of the National Organization of Professional Hispanic NRCS Employees, he and his wife traveled throughout the country and shared many memorable experiences.
Manuel was active in many civic organizations throughout his life. In Raymondville, he was a member and officer of the Jaycees. He was a founding member of the Helping Hand Club of Uvalde and a member of the Uvalde Golf Association where he served a term as president.
He was an avid sportsman who enjoyed golfing, fishing, and hunting.
He also coached baseball for several different leagues and barbecued for his family and friends. He enjoyed traveling with his family and making great memories during family vacations.
Visitation will begin on Wednesday, August 30, 2023, at 2 p.m. followed by a rosary at 7 p.m. at Rushing-Estes-Knowles Mortuary. A funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, August 31, 2023, at 2 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Cemetery.
