Manuel Alfonso Talavera of Uvalde passed away peacefully at the VITAS Hospice Unit in San Antonio Texas on August 3, 2018 at the age of 90. Mr. Talavera was born on February 28, 1928 at Arroyo Del Blanco Ranch in Sabinal, Texas to Carlos Talavera, Sr. and Felicitas Arizmendi Talavera. He was the second of six children. He attended elementary school in Knippa, Texas and West Main School in Uvalde. After meeting his future wife Refugia (Cuca) Uriegas at the old Ritz Theater on West Main street in the mid 1940's and a year long courtship they were united in Holy Matrimony at Sacred Heart Catholic Church on December 18, 1949. Mr. Talavera worked as a truck driver and grocery warehouse clerk for Labatt Wholesale of San Antonio. In 1970 he began work for Gaztke Farms in Wisconsin followed by employment with Godfrey Foods in Waukesha Wisconsin from where he retired in 1993 and returned to his hometown of Uvalde in 1994. Mr. Talavera was a devoted member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church where he had faithfully served as a Eucharistic minister, lector and music minister. Among his interests were music, fishing, watching sports on television and serving his Parish community. Mr. Talavera is survived by his wife of 68 years, 3 daughters, Christine T. Tabares of West Bend, Wisconsin, Rosario T. Compean of San Antonio, and Cecilia T. Martinez and husband George E. Martinez of Uvalde, 4 sons, Homero Alfonso Talavera and wife Maria Elena of San Antonio, Edward Talavera of Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin, Julian Talavera of San Antonio, and James D. Talavera of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, 16 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.He is also survived by 2 sisters, Elvira Montalvo of Midland Texas and Estella Silva of Uvalde, and brother,
Carlos Talavera II of San Antonio and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents and 2 brothers, Ricardo Talavera and Ismael Talavera. Mr. Talavera was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He will be dearly missed by his family and the Sacred Heart Parish community. Funeral mass will be held on Tuesday, August 7, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with burial following in Hillcrest Cemetery. Serving as his Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Christopher M. Compean, Jason P. Martinez, Matthew Martinez, Andrew J. Martinez, Jacob Talavera, and son in law George E. Martinez. Honorary Pallbearers will be all his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
