Marie Gilleland of Uvalde passed away on February 13, 2011 in Uvalde Memorial Hospital at the age of 56. She was born on November 26, 1954 in Uvalde, Texas to Pete and Bertha Jones Simpson. Survivors include her three children, Cory Robertson of Uvalde, now stationed at Ft. Bragg, NC and Brandon Gilleland and Jennifer Gilleland, both of Uvalde father, Pete Simpson of Carrizo Springs sisters, Sandra Simpson of Uvalde Amy Lou Schmidt and children, Sally and Charles Schmidt of Carrizo Springs and Olivia Walters of Bastrop, TX two granddaughters, Kaytlyn and Gracie Robertson and an abundance of friends and loved ones. She was preceded in death by her mother, Bertha Simpson. Marie began bowling at an early age and became an avid bowler. She traveled the country competing in various bowling tournaments. She used her knowledge of bowling to teach her bowling skills to many local children. She received an Associate of Arts degree from Southwest Texas Junior College in Child Development. The love of teaching would later progress in her life when she became a child daycare giver at A Childs Day. In 1991, she was a volunteer with the World Soaring Competition in Uvalde and was part of Team Uvalde, a community group composed of dozens of volunteers who took on responsibilities ranging from providing and organizing social activities, including a parade, to coordination of all ceremonial housing for participants. She also enjoyed being a business owner of Cute and Country, a craft store in Uvalde. In her spare time, she painted gourds and sold those on the side. Above all her accomplishments and goals in her life, the true love of her life were her children, Cory, Jennifer, and Brandon. Took many years, three children, job, house, a lot of reading, math, dos and donts. Many late nights, but all accomplished before I hit 50 Marie Gilleland. Funeral services will be held on Friday February 18, 2011 at 2:00 PM at RushingEstesKnowles Chapel. Cremation under the direction of RushingEstesKnowles Mortuary.
