Mark Wayne Ramirez of Uvalde, Texas passed away on February 20, 2021 in San Antonio, Texas at the age of 59. He was born in San Angelo, Texas to Stella (Falcon) and Romeo Garza Ramirez.
Mark graduated from Central High School in 1980. He then attended Angelo State University and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Science in 1985. He was a member of the ASU Block & Bridle Club and was on the 1984 National Western Champion Wool Judging Team. While attending college, he enjoyed bull riding for a couple of years at the weekend buck-out shoots held in Eldorado.
During his high school and college years, he worked for Dr. Terrell Sheen, either at his veterinary clinic, his ranch or with his rental properties until Mark got on with the United States Department of Agriculture.
Mark had a 33-year career with the USDA/Natural Resources Conservation Service. He started out with the agency in 1988 as a Soil Conservationist Technician in San Angelo. Throughout his career, he worked in field offices in Robert Lee, Childress, Sterling City, and lastly in Uvalde where he held the supervisory position of Resource Conservationist.
In August 1997, he married Gloria Hernandez in San Angelo who said he was her knight in shining armor. They welcomed their only child, a daughter, Rebekah Iliana, in October 2000, who everyone knew was Mark’s pride and joy.
Mark was a loving husband and father with many fine qualities. Other words used to describe him are strong, caring, kind, intelligent, and a loyal man with integrity. He always had a smile on his face and made everyone feel good about themselves. Mark always put others before himself. He was a good role model for the youth and encouraged them to pursue a higher education upon high school graduation.
Mark was a parishioner of Sacred Heart Church in Uvalde where he was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #3245.
He is survived by his best friend and loving wife of 23 years, Gloria Ramirez of Uvalde, Texas; beloved daughter, Rebekah Iliana Ramirez of College Station, Texas; sisters, Cynthia Priddy and husband Donald of Brownwood, Texas and Sandra Ledezma and beau Oscar Calderon of San Angelo; and brother, Michael Ramirez and wife Estella of San Saba, Texas
Mark is preceded in death by his parents, Stella (Falcon) and Romeo Garza Ramirez.
A Visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 3, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. followed by a recitation of the Holy Rosary at 7:00 p.m. at Rushing-Estes-Knowles Mortuary.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, March 4, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Uvalde. Interment will follow at Garden of Memories Cemetery in Menard, Texas at 2:00 PM.
Gentlemen serving as Pallbearers for the funeral mass will be Mark’s Brother Knights; Jorge Romero, Jay Gonzalez, Al Ramirez, John Aviles, Javier Zamora, and Gilbert Ibarra.
Gentlemen serving as Pallbearers at the graveside services will be USDA/NRCS employees Rick Luna, Brent Baucom, Tony Carrizales, Brad Teplicek, Jim Bob Ellisor, and Leo Carrillo. Honorary Pallbearers will be Terrell Sheen, Jimmy Fontenot, Randy Fontenot, Daniel Fontenot, Wayne “Flash” Cockrell, Sam Fuhlendorf, Greg Curry, and Lance McNeely.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his memory to the Knights of Columbus 3245 at 209 North Grove Street, Uvalde, Texas 78801 or to the Knippa ISD “Founders Scholarship”, P. O. Box 99, Knippa, Texas 78870.
*100-person maximum can be accommodated at the funeral chapel at a time for Visitation. Upon entering the funeral home, temperatures will be taken and requirements are that social distancing of 6’ feet is practiced as well as a mask to be worn for every person in the building.
