Mary Ann was born December 26, 1934 in Austin, Texas to Clarence and Mary Grant Harwood. When she was a young child, her family moved to Kingsville, Texas, where her father became a college professor and she attended and graduated from Kingsville High School. Mary Ann then went on to attend Texas A&l University and graduated with a degree in Home Economics.
While at Texas A&I, she met Cecil H. Arnim, Jr. (Salty) and they were married on August 17, 1956 in Kingsville. Upon graduating from Texas A&I University, they moved to Bryan/College Station where Salty attended the Texas A&M Veterinary School and Mary Ann taught school. After Salty graduated from Veterinary School and finished his service in the United States Army, they moved to Uvalde where Salty opened his veterinary practice and Mary Ann opened a day care school.
Mary Ann was an entrepreneur and a volunteer who was instrumental in starting the first animal shelter in Uvalde. She was an indispensable business partner to Salty in his veterinary practice. In her spare time, she loved to play tennis and bridge and could often be seen on the ski slopes in Colorado in the wintertime.
Mary Ann was an avid reader, a wonderful cook and loved puzzles of all kinds.
Mary Ann was a wonderful mother to two sons, Cecil H. Arnim, Ill and Thomas Arnim. In addition, she was a devoted grandmother to her two granddaughters, Elizabeth and Emily. She loved their many visits to Uvalde that included trips to the park, teaching them to ride bikes and playing games. Mary Ann leaves behind a legacy of learning and love of family, which lives on in the hearts of all those she loved so well.
