Mary Sue Blalock Cunningham was born on July 10, 1920 in Galveston, Texas and went to sing in the heavenly choir, at 90 years of age, on September 13, 2010 in Capitan, New Mexico.
She was preceded in death by her husband, W. B. Buck Cunningham in 1994 parents, J. T. and Mary Eleanor Blalock inlaws Will Sallie Cunningham, and one son, Jack Preston Cunningham.
Mary Sues living siblings are Jack Blalock, Federal Way, Washington Norma Babe Duke, Utopia, Texas Bill Norma Blalock, Poteet, Texas and Nancy Lytle Blaisdell, Federal Way, Washington.
Her surviving children and childreninlaws are: Mary Jane Tate, Ruth C. Standifer, and David Jean Cunningham, all of Capitan, New Mexico Margaret R. J. Heartsill of Bryan, Texas, and her daughterinlaw, Carol Cunningham, Cleveland, Texas.
Her Grandchildren are Rusty and Yari Tate of Carpenteria, California Bobbi Sue and Russell Shearer of Capitan, New Mexico Judson Christine Heartsill of Seabrook, Texas Lacy Roger Penny of Dalzell, South Carolina Laurie Terrell and fiance, Donovan Smith of Levelland, Texas Jason Cunningham of Houston, Texas Casey Stuart Graham of Tatum, New Mexico Jessica Mike Sanchez and Jennifer Cunningham all of Austin, Texas.
She is also survived by 12 great grand children. She leaves behind a double handful of nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews who knew her as Aunt Mary Sue or Aunt Sis.
Mary Sue grew up in the Sabinal Canyon, reared her children there, then moved to the South Plains. In 1970 she and Buck, having an empty nest, became house parents at the South Texas Childrens Home in Pettus, Texas. After they retired, they eventually settled in Uvalde on High Street. There they quickly became known as the tomato couple as Buck raised and Mary Sue sold tomatoes. She also enjoyed her flowers in the yard, and activities at Baptist Temple Church where Buck was a deacon.
In 1999 Mary Sue moved to Capitan, New Mexico to make her home with her oldest daughter, Mary Jane, and lived there until the present. She loved seeing the wildlife across the road at home, enjoyed making crocheted snowflakes as Christmas presents for her grandchildren, and quilting with a group of friends. She was also a devoted Spurs fan.
Graveside services will be Monday, September 20 at 4:00 PM at Waresville Cemetery in Utopia, TX. Visitation will be from 1:30 3:30 PM at Rushing Estes Knowles Mortuary in Sabinal, TX. The family suggests memorials to the Ruidoso Home Health and Hospice, Ruidoso, N.M., the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation, or a childrens charity of ones choice.
