Mary Fischer Dirksen, 89, of Uvalde, TX, passed away March 29, 2017 at her home surrounded by family. Mary was born on January 13, 1928, in Dayton, Ohio to Catherine Steinmetz Fischer and John Fischer. She married Herbert Dirksen June 17, 1950 in Frenchtown, Ohio. Together they had 11 children, 25 grandchildren, and 32 great grandchildren. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.
Mary was a registered nurse. She graduated from Good Samaritan Hospital in Dayton, Ohio. Herbert and Mary operated a family dairy farm for 19 years before moving to Texas in 1969. In Uvalde, Mary worked at Uvalde Memorial Hospital and Amistad Nursing Home. She was Director of Nursing for many years and established the Certified Nursing Assistant program. Mary and Herbert were very active in Sacred Heart Church serving for many years as catechists and Eucharistic Ministers bringing communion to the homebound. She was a long time member of Catholic Women's Club, Green Thumb Garden Club, El Progreso, Texas Agri-Women, Chili Peppers, and Hospital Auxiliary. Mary also enjoyed playing bridge and water aerobics at the Herby Ham Activity Center.
Mary is survived by her brothers Carl Fischer and Art, (Regina) Fischer, of Versailles, Ohio, children Irene Light and husband Randy of College Station, their children Julie Boytim and husband Edward, Susan Farmer and husband Chris, David Light and wife April; Kathy Bendele and husband Ray of Kingsville, their children Clint Bendele and wife Stacey, Melissa Wyman and husband Bill; Katie Hughes and husband Matt; Jacob Bendele and wife Lindsey; Ann Catron of San Antonio, her children Gretchen Bley and husband Matt, Heather Catron, Amanda Brown and husband Aron; Jane Collins and husband Ronnie of Uvalde and her children Brad Dimmitt and wife Brittany, Nathan Dimmitt and wife Lori, Benjamin Dimmitt; Marge Dunlap and husband Doug of San Antonio, their children Dirk Dunlap and wife Christina, Zach Dunlap, Lela Budnik and husband Brian, Joan Koop and her husband Hermes of Naples, Fl, their children Andree Koop, Hans Koop, Nico Koop and wife Tara, Anneke Koop; Linda Dirksen of Orlando, Fl; Beth Andres of Uvalde, her children Seth Andres, Isaac Andres, Adam Andres; Ken Dirksen and wife Barby of Uvalde, their children Matt Dirksen, Will Dirksen, and thirty two great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by husband Herbert Dirksen, children James Dirksen and Mary Dirksen, grandson Michael Catron and brothers Ralph and Richard Fischer.
The Vigil service will be Sunday, April 2, 7:00 pm at Rushing-Estes-Knowles Mortuary. The Mass of Resurrection will be 10:00 am, Monday, April 3 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Cemetery.
Pallbearers are Brad Dimmitt, Nathan Dimmitt, Benjamin Dimmitt, Dirk Dunlap, Andree Koop, Nico Koop, Seth Andres, and Isaac Andres.
Altar Servers are Adam Andres and Jackson Bendele.
