Mary Fisher Willis, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister and aunt, passed away on Monday, April 18, 2016. Mary was born in Sabinal, Texas on February 21, 1935 the third child of Henry and June Fisher of Utopia, Texas. Although a child of the Depression, Mary had a happy childhood, once describing herself as an "ordinary girl born into the best family in the world". She attended Utopia schools and Southwest Texas State University. After graduation she began teaching school in Corpus Christi in 1958. There she met and married James E. Willis, Jr. on June 10, 1961. They eventually moved to San Antonio where they raised their daughters and enjoyed almost 55 years of marriage.
Mary was a life long member of the United Methodist Church and cherished her family's history of faith and service. She loved family reunions at the Fisher Camp, the Texas Hill Country, children's books, and spending time with her seven grandchildren. She was a high school teacher, kindergarten teacher, and school librarian until her retirement in 1999. Following her retirement, she and Jim moved to Utopia to reside in her old family home.
Mary is survived by her husband, Jim Willis of Utopia, daughters Mary Cay Barker and husband Steve of Victoria and Ann Dreggors and husband David of San Antonio. She is also survived by her sisters, June Bible, Evelyn LeBouf and husband Clarence, and her brother Henry Fisher, Jr., her grandchildren Allison, Sam, Caroline and Jason Dreggors and Morgan, Sydney and Robin Barker, and many nieces and nephews.
A family interment will take place at the Jones Cemetery in Utopia, Texas at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 23rd. A memorial service will follow at 2:00 p.m. at the Utopia United Methodist Church.
