Minnie Pearl Backhaus Schlortt was born on September 5th, 1920 to Hermann and Agnes Fuchs Backhaus at Sharp, Texas, Milam County. She was baptized on January 2, 1921 in Thorndale Lutheran Church by Pastor J. E. Scheffel. In 1925, the family moved to San Antonio, and the following year to Floresville, where she grew up. She was confirmed on April 14, 1935 in First Lutheran Church of Floresville by Pastor Theo Winters. She graduated from Floresville High School in 1937. In 1938, she met Robert Ernest Schlortt in Floresville, where he was teaching in the country schools. They were married on July 20th, 1940 in St. John’s Lutheran Church, Poth, Texas by Pastor J. K. Poch. In 1942, their first child, Robert Jr. was born. When he was only four weeks old, her husband volunteered in the Army Air Corps, and for the next 38 months, she cared for her young son while her husband served his country. When he returned, the family moved to San Marcos. In 1946, their second son, Hermann was born. In 1954, they moved to Knippa where in 1959, their daughter, Iris was born.
Minnie is survived by her two sons, Robert E. Schlortt, Jr. and wife, Karen of Kyle, Texas, Hermann W. Schlortt of Floresville, Texas and wife, Earline of D’Hanis, Texas; daughter, Iris Leber and husband, Dean of Robstown, Texas; 9 grandchildren, Kara Kleimann and husband, Rob of Columbus, Texas, Robert E. Schlortt III and wife, Sandy of San Antonio, Texas, Elizabeth Schlortt of San Antonio, Texas, LTC H. William Schlortt and wife, Holly of D’Hanis, Texas, Stacey Toungate and husband, Blake of Leander, Texas, Audrey Chapman and husband, John of D’Hanis, Texas, Harris Schlortt and wife, Kelsey of Pipe Creek, Texas, Jake Leber of Atlanta, Georgia, Renn Leber of Robstown, Texas; 16 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Minnie is preceded in death by her husband, Robert Ernest Schlortt Sr.; her parents, her two sisters, Mabel Connally and Myrtle Bartels; her infant brother, Oscar Frederick; her niece and nephew, Connie and Harold Connally.
Visitation will be held Friday, January 10, 2020 at 5:00 p.m. at Rushing-Estes-Knowles Mortuary in Uvalde.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 11, 2020 at 10:00 a.m. at Knippa Lutheran Church in Knippa, Texas, following interment at 4:00 p.m. at Young School House Cemetery in Smithville, Texas.
