Modene Davis Horton, 98 of Sabinal, died peacefully on Monday, December 9, 2024, in Uvalde.
She was born on July 11, 1926, in Fort Cobb, Oklahoma to Walter and Sylvia (Sampson) Davis. Modene married Eck Horton on October 23, 1946, in Sabinal. The couple met in San Francisco, California as he was returning from the Pacific Theatre at the conclusion of World War II.
The Davis family had moved from Oklahoma to California in the early 1940'8 to escape the "dust bowl" and took advantage of late depression era opportunities further west.
Modene is preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 66 years, Eck Horton, sister, Juanita (Walter) Moody, brother, Charles (Edna) Davis, son, Douglas Horton, and daughter-in-law, Kimberly Horton.
She is survived by sons Stephen (Debby) Horton, and Kirk Horton. Also surviving are seven grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, and six great great grandchildren.
While living in Oklahoma, she became a Christian at a young age at which time she was baptized in the river. Modene was a talented musician playing the piano, organ and accordion. Having never taken a music lesson, she played by "ear". Her music talents were shared for over 60 years with her church families of the Uvalde Assembly of God and Sabinal First Baptist.
After the couple married, they made their home on the family ranch, North of Sabinal, where she was a faithful rancher's wife and partner. She loved and enjoyed all things revolving around her children and grandchildren. In addition to being a wonderful cook and seamstress, she spent many hours doing crochet, needlepoint and crossword puzzles.
She and Eck enjoyed traveling, which included an almost annual trip to California to visit her family there. They also went many places throughout the country with friends and family members. One of their travel highlights was to the holy land.
Visitation will be held Sunday, December 15, 2024, from 4 p.m. To 5:30 p.m. At Rushing-Estes-Knowles Mortuary in Sabinal. A funeral service will be held on Monday, December 16, 2024, at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Sabinal, interment will follow at Sabinal Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggest memorial donations be made to Sabinal First Baptist church or Sabinal Cemetery Association.
