Muryle LaVerne Hale Shurley passed away peacefully in the early morning of January 9, 2016, after watching her beloved Spurs win by one point the night before. She was born the oldest of a surprise set of twins on July 19, 1924 in Uvalde, TX to Andrew Roy and Myrtle Jones Hale. She married Walter Thomas "Tommy" Shurley Jr. on Easter Sunday, April 1, 1945, at The First Baptist Church of Uvalde. After their wedding, they moved to Little Rock, AR for a short time before relocating to Sanderson, TX where they welcomed their two children. When their children were still young, they settled once again in Uvalde where Muryle eventually became a Vice President at First Savings and Loan until her retirement in 1988.
After 49 years of marriage, her darling Tommy preceded her in death on October 9, 1994. She is also preceded in death by her brother Andrew Roy Hale, Jr. She is survived by her twin sister, Buryle Hale Ginnow of Georgetown, TX; a son, Richard Earl Shurley and wife, Judy, of Corpus Christi, TX; a daughter, Sharon Shurley Rose, of Uvalde; eight grandchildren, Belinda Phillips and husband, Bryan; April Skoruppa and husband, Rick; Laura Satrum and husband, Aaron; Nicki Dooms and husband Ryan; Mary Lozano and husband, Omar; Misty Richardson and husband, James; Dusty Ellis and husband, Aaron; Patrick Rose; Sarah Tompkins and husband, Joshua; and five great-grandchildren, Walter Skoruppa; Mark Shurley; Molly Lozano; and Jack and Emma Tompkins.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, January 12, 2016 at 10:00 AM at The First Presbyterian Church of Uvalde with burial following in the old Uvalde Cemetery with Tony Gruben officiating. Pallbearers will be Judge Bill Mitchell, Patrick Rose, Walter Skoruppa, James Richardson, Aaron Satrum, Aaron Ellis, Omar Lozano, and Joshua Tompkins. Honorary Pallbearers will be Dr. Mark Black, Bob Coble, Dr. Mike Dishman, Steve Dishman, Randy Gerdes, Mike Huddleston, Rusty Jones, Tom Lane, Michael Robinson, Ken Rutherford, and Tim Wilson. Memorial donations may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Uvalde or to a charity of one's choice.
