Phillip J Cooper passed away peacefully in his sleep on the morning of May 15, 2018. He was born to Marcus and Mary Ada Cooper on April 2, 1934, in George West, Texas. He attended elementary school in Clegg, Texas and high school in George West, Texas. From there he joined the army and served 4 years being stationed in various basis in Texas and Louisiana.
He met and married Shirley Cooper in 1963 and moved to Uvalde in 1970. There he was an active member of the Lutheran Church, and he worked for Medina Electric co-op until he retired. After retirement, he enjoyed attending church and various church functions, traveling with his wife, fishing with his brothers, and learning various forms of wood working. He made a hand-carved manger scene for his wife, made butterfly crosses for his family, but his favorite activity was making pen and pencil sets. He often donated matching sets to church functions and family reunions for silent auctions and he gave them to his doctors and nurses as a token of his appreciation of their work. He was a generous man.
He was preceded in death by his parents: Marcus and Mary Ada Cooper, and his brothers Dwain and Freddy Cooper of George West, Texas and Allen Cooper of Martinez, Georgia, and cousin Travis Cooper of Uvalde, Texas.
He is survived by: his wife of 53 years, Shirley Cooper; children: Kathy Cooper and Ernie Aguilar of Uvalde, Texas, Randy Smith and Shirley Richardson of George West, Texas, and Michael Graham of Katy, Texas; grandchildren: James Lucio of Chappell Hill, Texas, and Faith Lucio-Sleeper of Leander, Texas; 4 great-grandchildren: Jason, Railee, Jordan, and Talius; a sister-in-law: Helen Cooper of Martinez, Georgia; cousins: Jean and Carl Hyde of Rocksprings, Texas, and Billy Jean Cooper of Uvalde, Texas; as well as many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and numerous dear friends.
A memorial service will be held at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Knippa on June 18th at 11:00. A meal and fellowship will follow the service. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer's Association to Help Fight Alzheimer's at alz.orgAdact.alz.org/donate.
